Afshan Hashmi
Afshan was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 2005. Subsequently she qualified as a Solicitor-Advocate with Higher Rights of Audience in Civil and Criminal Proceedings, and was employed as an In-House Solicitor-Advocate instructed across a variety of disciplines. As a consequence of the experience she gained whilst in private practice she not only brings valuable skills acquired to her practice at the Bar, but she is also able to identify with the working customs of solicitor clients.

Employment Law
Afshan has an LLM Masters degree in Employment Law and a particular interest in discrimination in the workplace. Whilst in private practice she was the sole practitioner running the employment department in a trade union firm providing legal advice and representation to union members across the North West. She has represented public sector employees in internal disciplinary hearings and has extensive experience of conducting trials in the Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeal Tribunal.
Civil
Afshan has appeared in the County Court on a wide variety of civil litigation matters ranging from small claims hearings, multi-track trials and fast-track trials to contractual disputes and personal injury claims.
Professional Discipline/ Regulatory
Afshan has represented medical professionals in disciplinary hearings before the Interim Orders Panel and Fitness to Practice Panel at the General Medical Council. She has also acted for a number of legal professionals facing disciplinary action from professional bodies and is keen to further develop this niche area of her practice.
Family
Afshan has experience in high net worth ancillary relief proceedings; care proceedings; contact proceedings, and quasi-criminal proceedings emanating from breaches of non-molestation orders and occupation orders. She has also represented clients in the magistrates’ court before the Department for Work and Pensions.
Immigration
Afshan has represented clients in the Immigration Appeal Authority and the Immigration Appeal Tribunal in hearings ranging from entry clearance appeals, marriage appeals and work permit appeals to representation of asylum seekers where she has argued complex issues of law from the United Nations Refugee Convention, the European Convention of Human Rights (in particular Articles 3 and 8), and the legal rules under the UK immigration laws.
Crime
Afshan has experience of Magistrate’s Court trials and her Crown Court experience ranges from plea and case management hearings, sentencing hearings, bail applications and committal hearings to substantive trials. Afshan has also undertaken private prosecutions on behalf of clients.
